California Plan

Cal Plan is a 4-year independent study program whereby teachers without a music degree can attain Active status. Admission to the program is via performance audition and is available to teachers with two years of active teaching experience and a current roster of students. Academic study includes Music Theory (3 exams), Music History (2 exams), and Pedagogy (a 2-part exam covering General Pedagogy, plus Primary Instrument Pedagogy for piano, voice, strings, or winds). Practical study requirements include private lessons with an MTAC teacher; workshops, seminars and master classes; MTAC Convention attendance; and student participation in CM and monthly recitals. The Cal Plan Syllabus and application forms are available from the State Office. More information is available on the MTAC Website.
