Certificate of Merit Meeting

All teachers who are planning to enroll students in the Certificate of Merit program must attend the orientation meeting. There will be two orientation-meeting times offered.

The first is Wednesday, September 13 at 9:30 a.m.
The second is Sunday, September 17 at 4:00 p.m.
Meetings will be held at Lincoln Glen Church, 2700 Booksin Avenue, San Jose 95125.

October 1 – October 31 is the Enrollment period. Enrollment closes at 5PM on October 31.
Upon close of enrollment the parents of your students will be able to access the website and pay the CM fee directly.

November 1 – 10 is the period when a parent can go online and pay the CM enrollment fee. If the fee is NOT paid by November 10 at 5PM, they are automatically dropped from the program.

January 15 is the deadline for entering repertoire for ALL sections.

Teaching Composition in the Private Studio

This coming Wednesday, Mr. John Syzygy is going to share with us  “how to teaching composition in our private studio”. This event will be a hands-on learning lecture for us to use in daily teaching. Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

About John Syzygy-

John Syzygy received his B.M. and M.A. in Composition from San Jose State University, where he was a two-time winner of the Eva Thompson Phillips Award for Composition. He has won numerous awards for his solo and small ensemble works, most recently winning 1st Prize in the MTAC Composers Today Contest (2011). He has studied piano with Dr. Gwendolyn Mok, Dr. Laurel Brettell, Debbie Poryes, and Marc Steiner. His primary composition instructors include Dr. Pablo Furman, Dr. Brian Belet, and Dr. Daniel Wyman.


Concerto and Ensemble Festival

Second Annual MTAC Santa Clara Branch

Concerto/ Ensemble Music Festival 


The mission of the MTAC Santa Clara Branch Concerto/ Ensemble Music Festival is to provide a formal stage with competition atmosphere to gifted young musicians who are participating in the State Concerto Competitions or VOCE Competitions, as well as to all junior ensemble performers who want to show their music talent in a team. It is a good opportunity to participate in a smaller festival in preparation for other music competitions in the following months of 2015.

Description of Activities

  • Time: Friday, January 23, 2015, 7:00pm
  • Venue: Santa Clara University Recital Hall.
  • Registration: the 2015 Festival is open to students playing at a level comparable to Certificate of Merit Level V and up. Students must be enrolled by their teachers. Click here for the online registration form.
  • Fee:   Concerto: $65
    Duet: $110
    Ensembles of 3 or more: $45 per performer (not counting accompanist)
  • Award: all participants will receive certificates signed by MTAC Santa Clara Branch President and Piano Concerto/ Ensemble Music Festival Committee. One or two students from each category will be awarded “Best Performer of 2015 Festival” and will receive a cash prize.
  • Age: all music performers must be age 24 or younger.
  • Repertoire Length: no more than 12 minutes.
  • We encourage teachers who enroll their students to work as volunteers on the event day.
  • Space is limited. First come, first served.

CM Workshop

Please join us for a workshop to discuss using the Syllabus to select appropriate repertoire for you students, and to prepare them for the technique and theory parts of their CM Evaluation

We will also discuss Panel Evaluations, and how to enroll your students and prepare them for the Panel evaluations.

Please bring any questions you have about repertoire so that you don’t have to ask your CM Chairperson at the last minute.
